about

‘Hold Your Heart’ began over 31 years ago, when my father sang to me when I was in the womb. It was a melody my parents had come across through a couple of buskers. They used to tell me that this was my song - and in indigenous societies, every child has a song of their own.

It was the first melody I heard after my own fairly traumatic birth; and as the story goes, I stopped crying as soon as I heard it. It is this melody which forms the basis for the chorus of ‘Hold My Heart’.

Fast forward almost 31 years. I had forgotten ‘my song’, and, prompted by my mum, who had just read about the role of personal songs in indigenous cultures, asked my dad for the melody. After I heard it and found the chords on my guitar, the words arose spontaneously, inspired by the imagery I had experienced in an Ayahuasca ceremony a few years ago.

A few weeks later, I wrote the words and music for the verses - what I didn’t know is that I was pregnant myself at the time. The evening I finished the song, I had extremely severe abdominal pains - a week or so later, I found out about the pregnancy… and another couple of weeks down the line, I had surgery for what had turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy.

Recording the song has helped me heal and has become a journey of loss, birth, hope, love and commitment to life.

lyrics

Call on wisdom in your bones and skin
When you hear her voice, breathe in
With ancient ones watching over you
She held you here anew

Into love she went and out again
She knows your song, where you began
Into the waters, deep and oh so wide
She wanders always by your side

She walked upon the ocean floor
She heard a voice, asked for more
‘Come back to this life, you have been before,
I’ll guide you and hold your heart’

Call on strength within your wounded heart
Until your thoughts are torn apart
Into the earth, with every step you take
She knows there’s no mistake

Into love we go and through it all
Into every word we call
Into the sky, as feathers turn to dust
And into life we trust

You’ll walk upon the ocean floor
You’ll hear a voice, ask for more
‘Come back to this life, you have been before,
I’ll guide you and hold your heart’

I walked upon the ocean floor
I heard a voice, asked for more
‘Come back to this life, you have been before,
I’ll guide you and hold your heart’
